India freezes assets worth 428 million rupees, main suspect in Crypto Assets phishing fraud case investigated.
[Block Rhythm] On August 6, the Indian Enforcement Directorate launched an investigation into a large-scale Crypto Assets fraud case, freezing assets worth 428 million rupees (approximately 4.8 million USD) belonging to the involved fraudster Chirag Tomar, his relatives, and related entities. This law enforcement action was carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which includes seizing 18 properties located in Delhi and multiple bank accounts.
Chirag Tomar is the main mastermind behind a Crypto Assets phishing scam that lasted from mid-2021 to the end of 2023, primarily targeting users of a certain trading platform. By mimicking the fake website of the Crypto Assets trading platform or using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, they lured users to log in, thereby stealing approximately 20 million dollars worth of Crypto Assets.
